Roles and Ranks

• CENSOR

  Censors moderate pvblic morality, enforce the laws of the Repvblic, and preside over elections alongside the consvls.

• CONSVL

  Consvls head the Brvhtopian Senate. They present bills in the Senate and Pvblic Assembly and preside over the elections. One may not serve two consecutive terms as consvl.

• PRAETOR

  Praetors preside over criminal trials, enforce the laws of the repvblic, and bully newfags.

• SENATOR

  Senators comprise the Brvhtopian Senate. They deliberate and vote on the laws presented by the Consvls.

• PATRICIAN

  Patricians are the aristocratic class of the Brvhtopian Repvblic. Only they can run in elections.

• PLEBEIAN

  Plebeians are all non-patrician citizens of the Repvblic. They are given legal protections and suffrage, but they may not run for office.

• BARBARIAN

  All non-Brvhtopians are barbarians. They are afforded minimal legal protection and cannot vote nor run for office.

• SLAVE

  Slaves have no legal protections.

Elections

Brvhtopians hold elections every seven days. Any patrician may sign up to run for office (except the current consvls, who may only run for a praetorship). A Brvhtopian can only run for one office per election.

Each election, 2 consvls and 2 praetors are elected to serve their seven-day terms. After their terms run out, they stop being consvls and praetors, but are given a lifetime senate membership as senators.

All free citizens of the repvblic may vote in elections. The winners are decided by a simple majority.

Legislation

The legislative branch of the Brvhtopian Repvblic consists of two houses, the Senate and the Pvblic assembly.

Senate

When the consvls wish to pass a piece of legislation, he first presents it to the Senate. There, the senators may freely discuss the law, its positives and negatives, any changes which could be made, etc. The Consvls, after deliberation, can choose to alter or discard the legislation, or they can pass it on to the Pvblic Assembly.

Pvblic Assembly

When a piece of legislation is put forth to the Pvblic Assembly, all citizens of Brvhtopia may vote in its favour, or against it. The bill must stay in the Assembly for a minimum of 2 hours, and until at least 8 people have voted. As well, a bill cannot remain in the Assembly for more than 24 hours.

When the voting period has ended, at the discretion of the Consvls, the votes are tallied. A majority of for votes are required for the bill to become a law.

Legal System

Citizens of Brvhtopia have certain rights under the law. One of these is the right to a trial. When a Brvhtopian is charged with a crime, he may appeal it, and request a trial. Here is the trial procedure:

1. The censors appoint one of the praetors as judge for the trial, and one citizen as the prosecutor, the defendant may pick a citizen to represent him as part of the defence.
2. The defence talks with the prosecutor and judge. The defence may agree to a plea deal to avoid the trial. Otherwise, the trial continues.
3. The judge selects a jury of at least four people. The jury must be approved by the defence, but they must present a reasonable argument for rejecting a jury.
4. The prosecutor writes his statement and presents it to the jury. Then the defence responds. Both should be given a reasonable amount of time to write thair statements.
5. The jury deliberates in private, then delivers a verdict of guilty or not guilty.
